Addressing my concerns about physical activity

You might have concerns about doing physical activity. Most of the time, there are simple things you can do to address these concerns.

Here are some ways to address common concerns.

I am worried that physical activity will make me thirsty

  • Suck on an ice cube to cool down and keep your mouth from feeling dry.

  • Talk to your nurse or doctor about increasing the amount of fluid you can have each day.

  • Remember you may lose a small amount of fluid by exercising, so you can accommodate this in your fluid measurements

  • Use this app to Make a Plan to Have Less Fluids.

I am worried that I will injure myself

  • Always remember to warm up and cool down

  • Start with activities that are easy for you and gradually make them harder

  • Start with simple and slow activities that build strength

  • Speak to your healthcare team for approved exercises for you

I am worried that I will fall

Here are some precautions to take to prevent falls:

  • Use supportive shoes for walking and exercising

  • Always use a handrail on the stairs

  • Stick to well-lit paths and rooms

  • Allow your eyes to adjust when moving between light and dark rooms

  • Always wear prescription glasses or lenses if needed

  • Wear sunglasses and a hat to reduce glare in the sun

  • Take care on wet or slippery floors

  • Keep paths clear of grass leaves and moss

  • Take your time when moving from sitting to standing

  • Use a walking stick or frame if needed

  • Be sure to pick up your feet rather than shuffling when you walk

Here are some safety tips:

  • Don’t exercise immediately after dialysis especially if you are feeling light headed or having cramps

  • Talk to your pharmacist or doctor if your medication is making you dizzy/light headed

  • Check your blood glucose before exercising if you are diabetic

  • Get your eyes tested regularly

I am worried that I can't swim because I am on dialysis

  • Swimming is a fantastic way to build strength and feel refreshed. Ask your healthcare team if it is safe for you to swim.

  • If they said yes! Try starting with walking up and down a shallow pool as seen in this video.

  • If they said no. Ask them what exercises you can complete during dialysis.
