Making a mental health care plan

A Mental Health Care Plan is a formal plan for anyone dealing with mental health issues. It is involves making a referral to a health professional who specialises in psychological health. This might be a psychologist or psychiatrist or you can make a Mental Health Care Plan with your GP.

How to make a mental health care plan

1. Book an appointment with your GP

  • Book a double appointment if possible. Talking about your emotions can be difficult, so give yourself enough time.

  • Write down questions or notes. Having a list will help to explain what you are going through.

2. Talk about what you are feeling

  • Tell your GP what has been on your mind

  • Ask them about making a Mental Health Care Plan

  • Decide together what services would suit you and get a referral

For more information on a Mental Health Care Plan, please speak to your GP.

What does this plan cover?

With a Mental Health Care Plan you will be entitled to Medicare rebates for up to 10 sessions with mental health care services. This includes psychologists, counsellors and social workers. It covers both individual and group sessions.

You can’t get Medicare rebates for all 10 sessions in one go. After the first 6 sessions you need to see your GP again for a mental health review and another referral.
