Summary

  • Aim for 2-3 serves of lean meat, poultry, seafood, eggs or legumes daily.

  • Choose low potassium fruits/vegetables like apple, pear, peas and broccoli. Avoid fruit juice, potato crisps and tomato paste.

  • Take your phosphate binder with high phosphate meals. Avoid vegemite, ham, bacon, salami and cola soft drinks.

  • Read the labels on the back of food packets. Choose foods that have less than 120mg of salt (sodium) per 100g and less than 3g of saturated fat per 100g.

  • Ask restaurants if they can change dishes to be more dialysis friendly

  • When eating at a friend’s house, call ahead to let them know your dietary needs.
